Safety lines are an important part of fall protection systems that help keep people safe when working at heights. Regular inspections and testing ensure that safety lines are reliable and fit for use, and that they meet industry regulations and standards BS:7883 2019. These inspections are to carried out on a one time annual basis (every 12 months) by a competent and qualified person, and a visual check by each user before use.
In the UK, ladders must be regularly inspected to ensure they are safe and suitable for use, and to comply with legislation such as the Work at Height Regulations 2005 BS:4211. Inspections are to be carried out by a competent person and also pre use checks by each user.
Guardrails are a great collective edge protection solution providing they are installed, inspected and maintained inline with manufacturers instructions and BS EN 13374.
They offer suitable protection without the need for further training. An annual inspection is required to ensure the system is safe for use.
Abseiling systems are used for tasks such as window cleaning and cladding maintenance, and are sometimes the only way to access certain areas.
There are several British Standards (BS) that relate to abseiling. Other standards that may be relevant to abseiling include: LOLER 1998, BS 7883:2019, and ISO 22846.
BS 7985:2013: The Code of Practice for the use of Rope Access methods for Industrial Purposes, which recommends that abseil anchor systems installed in accordance with BS 8610:2017 should be inspected every 6 months.
BS 8610:2017: The standard for abseil anchors.
BS EN 795:2012: The standard for class A anchor points.
EN362: The standard for connectors.
